Josephine Pipkin Gottschalk, 1909-1996 Josephine Pipkin was the daughter of Jesse Enos, Sr. and Adeline Hardesty Pipkin, was born in St. Louis, MO on 20 Feb 1909. She died 25 Mar 1996 in Bellingham, WA. She married Max Jules Gottschalk, son of Max Wilhelm Gottschalk on 20 Feb 1942. They were divorced in 1944. She had an early interest in music and graduated from the Cinncinnati College of Music. She was an accomplished pianist. She had a career as a teacher, first of music in St. Louis and then in elementary school in California where she touched the lives of many young people. After retiring in 1974, she was involved in the community in Frewno, CA belonging to the Unitarian Church where she played on Sundays for the services. She also was active in the Fresno Teachers Retirement organization, Mu Phi Epsilon Music Soroity, and the American Association of University Women. In 1989, at the age of 80, she moved to Point Roberts, WA and began a new life in a loving community. She became a part of the senior activities and cheered the lives of many with her music and optimistic spirit. She had a number of life-threatening crises, but always bounced back and cheered those around her. She had a heart attack the evening of 24 Mar 1996. She did not suffer long. On March 25, 1996 in Bellingham, WA, she passed from this life into the life beyond. She was cremated in Bellingham. A memorial service was held at the Point Roberts Senior Center and another at the Unitarian Church in Fresno, CA on 12 May 1996. A permanent marker will be placed in the Memorial Garden at the Church. She is survived by her two children, Sandra Marie and Jules Pipkin, her daughter-in-law, Linda Gottschalk, her son-in-law, Douglas Carpenter, four grandchildren: Brian Jeffrey Carpenter of Vancouver, Laura Marie Carpenter Reed of Bellingham, WA, Jules Emerick Gottschalk and Claire Isabel Gottschalk of Fresno, CA and one great-grandchild, Alexander Edward Reed of Bellingham. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her brother, Jesse Enos Pipkin, Jr. and sister Mary Louise Pipkin Johnson.
