Daily Gate City [Iowa] from last Monday's edition May 12, 2003 Martin E. Koss March 23, 1915 - May 9, 2003 BURLINGTON - Martin E. Koss, 88, of Burlington, died at 3:25 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2003, at Great River Medical Center, West Burlington. He was born on March 23, 1915, in rural Keokuk, the son of Martin John and Hazel Belle Jones Koss. He married Leola A.E. Buck on Aug. 23, 1942, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on Jan. 30, 2003. Survivors include: two sons, Merrill (Valerie) M. Koss of North Hollywood, Calif., and Lyle Stephen Koss of Burlington; a daughter, Lynette (Ron) Miller of Burlington; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie Warsaw of East Peoria, Ill.; and a brother, Rev. Laurence Koss of Melbourne, Fla. He also was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Koss was a 1933 graduate of Keokuk High School and attended Hibbing Jr. College in Hibbing, Minn. He had worked at DuPont, General Mills, was store layout designer at Krogers, Lagomarcino and Benner Tea Co. He also worked at Harris Plumbing and Heating and as a parking ramp attendant for Burlington Medical Center, retiring in 1978. Mr. Koss enjoyed genealogy and organized the genealogy association in Burlington in 1972. He received the Eagle Scout award while a senior in high school and was honored as the oldest scout in Des Moines County in the summer of 2002. He loved photography and gardening. Mr. Koss was a SgT3 Army veteran during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Service Star and Good Conduct Medals. Mr. Koss was a member of the Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, Burlington, with Pastor Ron Jewett officiating. Burial will be in the Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. Military rites will be conducted by Veterans Honor Guard of VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52 and the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League. Friends may call today until 8 p.m. at the chapel, with family meeting friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. A memorial has been established for Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene.
