Ernest F. Nickel Ernest F. Nickel, 80, of Jewell died 14 Nov 1984 at the hospital in Astoria. Funeral services were held November 17 at Hughes- Ransom Mortuary in Astoria. Burial was at the Jewell Cemetery, where Mr. Nickel was a caretaker for the past few years. He was born 13 Aug 1904 in Bladen, Neb., the son of Charles Ernest & Edith Alice Holmes Nickel. In 1922, Mr. Nickel moved to Greenwood, Utah, where he met his bride to be, Lenora Ashcroft. The couple were married on 15 Sep 1924 in Las Vegas, where the Nickels made their home for many years. Mr. Nickel was employed by Union Pacific Railroad before working primarily as a truck driver on the construction of Boulder (Hoover) Dam in the 1930s. Before relocating to Jewell in 1957, he was a maintenance man at the Flamingo and Riviera hotels. Survivors include his wife; daughters, Phyllis Ferrara of Forest Grove and Joyce Griswold of Marysville, Wash.; five grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Florence Sharpe of Las Vegas and several nieces and nephews.
