This is my Pipkin ggrandfather, also the grandfather of Compere Pipkin. 1 March 1899 – Mena Star Sheriff Pipkin Dead (with picture) Last Sunday at about 6 o’clock Sheriff J. L. (James Lewis) Pipkin died at his home on Clendening street in the city of pneumonia. Mr. Pipkin had not been very strong for several weeks, and by seeking to perform his duty by meeting the people of the various townships of the county for the purpose of collecting taxes he exposed himself too much to the inclement weather, resulting in his fatal illness as stated above. The funeral services were held at the grove in the Dallas cemetery, a large number of relatives and friends being in attendance, and were conducted by Rev. W. L. Compere of the Baptist Church. Mr. Pipkin was born 23 Feb 1850 in Coffeeville, Mississippi and came to this state in 1867. In 1869 he married Emily Barron who died about 2 years, thereafter, leaving one son, Minor Pipkin, the first child. He afterwards married Isabella McCormic who only lived about 3 years and in 1887 Mr. Pipkin married Miss Abigale McKinney, who survives him with 6 children. Cemetery reading lists James L. Pipkin with dates of 26 February 1850 – 23 February 1899 buried at Old Dallas Cemetery. Diane Sumrall dfsum@earthlink.net
