Chowan County, NC Register of Deeds Edw'd Smithwick to Tho's Paris, 1718 17 Apr 1718 To all to whom these presents come I Wm Charleton of Chowan Precinct Gent Exec of the Last Will & Testament of Edw'd Smithwick late of the same Precinct Gent Deceas'd Send Greetin &c. Whereas the sd Edw'd Smithwick in his Lifetime did Contract & agree wth Tho's Parris of Albemarle County Marth 4th for & in Consideration of the sum of Fifty pounds ye was then paid by the sd Tho's Paris unto him the sd Edw'd Smithwick that he the sd Edw'd Smithwick would Sell Grant Assigne & Transfer for unto him the sd Tho's Parris & his Heirs & Assigns in fee simple, a Tract or parcell of Land Containing One thousand four hundred & twenty acres be the same more or less Lying & being in Chowan Precinct on the Northern Side of Maratook River lying to the westward of other Land ye was formerly belonging to the sd Smithwick but now in the Tenure & occupation of Mr. Henry Speller & is the residue & remainder of a Larger Tract Granted by the true & absolute Ld's Prop'rs of Carolina as by their Pattent bearing date the 1st day of Dec'r 1712 will more fully appear and whereas the sd Edw'd Smithwick by the Last will & Testament bearing date (blank space) upon Record in the Secret'rs Office in ye Governm't having Impower'd me his Exer to Confirm & Make good all Such titles & Sales of Land as had not been perfected in his life time Now Know ye I the sd Wm Charleton by Vertue of ye powers & authority to me Given & Granted by the sd Edw'd Smethwick & for ye Considerations & purposes aforementioned Do Grant aleine Transfer & make over unto the sd Thos Parris & his Heirs & assynes for ever all the Right Title, Interest Claim & Demand w'tsoever with the sd Edw'd Smethwick or his Heirs Exe's or Adm's could might or ought or can have of in & to the Residue & remainder of a larger Tract of Land Containing two Thousand four hundred and twenty acres ye was Granted by the True & Absolute Lord & Prop'ers of Carolina the 1st day of Dec'r 1712 unto him the sd Edw'd Smethwick one thousand of which was formerly Sold unto Mr. Henry Speller which residue & remainder Contains by Estimation one thousand four hundred & twenty acres be the same more of Less & to the Western most Tract or Parcell of the afs'd Pattent binding to the Eastward on the afs'd Henry Speller's Land to the Westward on Land Granted to Cogswell & Dening & to the S'ward on Marattock River. To have and to hold the afs'd Tract or parcell of Land with all & Singular the appurtenances to ye same belonging or in any wise appertaining unto him the sd Tho's Parris his Heirs & Assigns for ever in fee Simple, free from any Lawfull Claim or Demand of any Person or Persons w'tsoever In witness whereof I the sd Wm Charleton has hereunto Sett my hand & Seal this 15th day of Apr'l 1718 Wm WC Charlton 0
